Sewing Organization

I could use help here.  Believe it or not I am an organized person.  My THINGS are organized, my life is not.  I like everything to have a spot. There are lots of bits and pieces in sewing.  Fabric, needles, machines, ironing boards, thread, and notions galore… you get my point.  Lots of STUFF.  Since sewing came into my life unexpectedly, I did not have a place for these things.  I was given a room in our house that was an unused “office”.  I could conform it anyway I wanted.  The problem is… I have no idea how I want it.  Case in point see below.

I have been using this desk I bought in college. I am 42 years old.  Do the math.  It’s old.  I think I pulled the lamp out of the garbage.  Not joking.  I have come to the realization that this desk will not work.  When I do any quilting, it falls off to the sides and pulls my stitching.  I KNOW this is why my stitching isn’t straight.  CLEARLY, I am using the wrong tool for the job.  It has nothing to do with the fact that I find myself checking my phone while I’m sewing.  It’s all the desk’s fault. Stupid desk.

Second is the fabric issues.  My house was built in the 1970’s and we have all these strange built in book shelves and drawers.  I am sure there is a way to make this work for me.  I am just not totally sure how.  I did read this Japanese book about folding.  Now, I fold everything like the book says, fabric included.  After reading this book, I became slightly obsessed.

Then, there is all the odd ball stabilizers, interfacing, fuseables, batting, etc.  I am at a loss for those, so I just rolled them all up and put them in a bin.

Then, I have notions and patterns.

My overall sewing room looks like this.

Not to mention I now have 5 sewing machines.  Why??  It’s like the ONLY perk to having your husband sell sewing machines for a living.  I can have whatever sewing machine I want.  It may not ooze sex appeal BUT I can have a serger set up with white thread AND I can have a serger set up with black thread.  Oh yeah. PLUS, Darren accidentally gave me the log-in to Brewer Sewing wholesale.  Mistake.  Big mistake.  I feel like a kid in a candy store.  I am trying to figure out a way to get it shipped to my house and not the store.  He doesn’t need to know about everything I buy.  Right?? “Why did you buy 18 million Wonder Clips?”  Because they are awesome, that’s why.  Leave me alone. “Do you really need 5 bolts of batting?”  Yes.  Go AWAY.

I am sharing the inner workings of my home because I need help.  I need to reorganize this space.  What are sewing must haves?  I know it’s not a 1990 Target desk and crooked lamp.  I need something better.  I am coming to terms with having to get rid of some of my furniture.  I LOVE my couch and chairs but it’s just not practical in that space anymore (sad face).  However, I want it to be cute.  Can I have practical AND cute?

I need suggestions. You can leave comments here, on Facebook, or Instagram.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers!

Andrea
